Inspiring Analytics Quote #2: "One accurate measurement is worth a thousand expert opinions." - Grace Hopper
Building off of last week's momentum in our "Analytics Inspiration" blog post series, the analytics quote of the week belongs to none other than Grace Hopper, an American computer scientist who achieved so many amazing things in her lifetime that not only was a Navy missile destroyer named after her, but her name is also used in reference to a super computer at NERSC (National Energy Research Computer Center). She is quoted as stating that "one accurate measurement is worth a thousand expert opinions."
The beauty in her famous quote is not just in how prevalent it is, especially in the data and computer science fields today; but also in how it can be applied to so many other fields to express one solitary necessity: the search for truth. To get to that truth, you must have accurate measurement.
This quote builds off of W. Edward Deming's quote from last week ("Without data, you're just another person with an opinion") nicely in that Deming's quote suggests the necessity of data, while Hopper's quote validates the collection and worth of accurate data. Which she describes straight and to the point as worth "more than a thousand expert opinions."
Everyone working in fields with an emphasis in quantitative analysis can relate to this. Much as there has been a major evolution in the Data Science, Research Technology, and Information Management industries in utilizing data; there has also been a parallel data verification movement. The goals here are simple: to produce both reliable and valid measurements of the data that drives the business goals forward.
Today, we salute you, Grace "Amazing Grace" Hopper, for not only your dedication in serving this country's armed forces; but also for being a significant catalyst in pushing our collective search for truth forward.
So, as members of The Chicago Analytics Group, what can we learn from Grace Hopper's famous quote?
We can learn that it is ever important to search for that truth, that accurate measurement (or group of measurements) that allows us to push our Thought Leadership forward.
