Analytics Inspiration Corner: “I believe that Data will set you free. At the end of the day, it’s all about how you turn those pieces of information into insights that will improve business.” - Steven Rice
To finish off the first month of our inspirational analytics quotes blog topic, I present to you all a memorable quote from Steven Rice, which not only speaks to the motivation of many professionals working in data-centric industries, but also touches on the importance of the value created from many analytic processes. Steven Rice, in his quote above, essentially simplifies what having meaningful analytic processes does for an organization and its clients: it “sets [them] free”.
And of course, this could have a lot of different interpretations to a wide range of professionals, but for me, I think of being “set free” as being confident in one’s decisions. And with the right data, and the right analytic processes to derive value from that data, you can effectively “turn those pieces of information into insights that will improve business” just as his quote states.
I’ll also add that being “set free” could very well also be a mindset, a clear and convincing voice in an increasingly noisy data world full of potential anxiety and stress. If at the end of the day, you have run the right analyses on the right data, I believe what Steven Rice is saying, to be very true. You have done all which you can, and you have created a lot of value that will allow your organization and its client base to move forward positively in their respective business.
So, as members of The Chicago Analytics Group, what can we learn from Steven Rice’s famous quote?
I believe we can learn that the motivation for creating positive value from an analytics perspective does not have to come merely from knowing that the end result (whether that be an insight, recommendation, or even new strategy altogether) is going to be highly regarded; but that the motivation can also come from feeling confident in the analytic processes you have developed in your organization, and by knowing that you will “be set free” at the end of day if you accomplish this.
There are far too many times when analytic professionals second guess themselves, do not feel the confidence to present their findings/ results, or are weighed down by the curious nature to always be searching for a better answer when many times we need to realize that we are “set free by the data”, and should not be tortured by it.
I hope that this last month of analytics quotes has been empowering, inspirational, and most importantly of all, given some insight into what being a member of The Chicago Analytics Group is all about.
